Scandisk and Defrag.

B

Bill Watt

On my daughter's machine: A PIII 700 machine with Win 2k.
When I tried to Defrag before backing up the drive the analyzer said
the drive did not need it. But it showed there were a number of
fragmented files so I tried it anyway. It went so slow I gave up. I
decided to Scandisk but couldn't find it. I searched the drive but
no luck and didn't see it anywhere in Start > Programs. Where is it?
The Defrag program said if Defrag didn't finish to use Scandisk.

Can the 32 bit Defrag program from Win ME be used? I use it on Win98
SE and it's fast and seems to do a good job.

Any information would be appreciated.

Errr... Not likely and if it could then NO NO NO!

Recovery Console - chkdsk...

Defragging requires the kernel be loaded though an initial attempt could be
made in safe mode.

Scandisk is done by an .EXE file. It seems to be part of Explorer.
Regardless, run Windows Explorer and get the properties of the partition
of interest. Click on the "Tools" tab. Click "Check Now".

Gee, Alfred, are you certain about this scandisk.exe thing?

The article applies to the Win2k Professional Edition. Not sure
that's what she has but I believe it is. The OS came loaded on the
Dell machine. Loading the Console looks somewhat complicated at
first reading. I see Chkdsk is back again. :)

The Defrag does the analyzing but the actual Defrag just sits there
with no apparent activity. I'll let it run longer. I like to defrag
before backing up the drive.

Thanks for all the information.

Hmm... Head to www.snapfiles.com/freeware/freeware.html (I think that's the
right URL) and grab a freeware defrag tool or grab the trial of O&O and see
if you can give it a kick start.

Ah - in my clipboard manager.

Disk Tools:
http://www.snapfiles.com/Freeware/system/fwdisktools.html

And what I tend to use (which is what I was actually digging in there for):

O&O Defrag V8.0 Professional:
http://www.oo-software.com/en/products/oodefrag/pro.html

Kick start it with that but before doing so I'd run a chkdsk via RC outside
of the OS - it only looks hard. It's actually pretty easy. ;)

I can't help but think that's the wrong way round: if defrag breaks it,
you're going to be restoring from the previous backup.

Gee, Alfred, are you certain about this scandisk.exe thing?

Fairly. Other than the word "not" getting lost in previous post. You
have evidence to the contrary?

What sort of evidence do you need? Scandisk is NOT a Windows 2000
utility, Windows 2000 uses chkdsk.exe and is is definately not part of
Explorer. Scandisk.exe and Scandskw.exe are DOS utilities for Windows
9x and Windows ME, they are NOT part of Explorer. What information do
you have that would point to any of these being part of Explorer? My
scandisk information comes from here:

Description of ScanDisk for Windows (Scandskw.exe) in Windows 98/Me

Thanks for all the information Galen. I wanted to run Scandisk first
which is what Defrag said to do if it didn't finish. Turns out it's
actually Chkdsk. Glad to know RC only looks hard. :) It seems
accessing Chkdsk should be easier than that though. No problem
finding Defrag.

Thanks,

I ran Chkdsk from CMD prompt and disk checks out ok.

Will let Defrag run when we get more time. I'll check out the
suggestions for the other Defrag programs as well.

Thanks to you all for your suggestions.
