Defrag/Scandisk

After trying to do a scandisk (before again re-atempting to do a defreg-defrag would not go beyond 1%), the same thing happens on scandisk..it never gets past scaninning a few folders. A message pops up that states that it will keep shutting down unless I close all windows programs..there are no windows programs open? Any suggestions on how I can do a successful scandisk in order to perform a successful defrag? I was going to upgrade to XP..would this take care of it or do I need to "clean up" first? Thanks...

Win2000 does not use scandisk...it sounds like youare using win98
perhaps? if so
boot to safe mode, turn pff screen saver
now you should be able to run scan disk and defrag
