Hi all,
I have a problem with windows ME (sorry its not 2000 but couldn't an appropriate room).

my computer will not run defrag the following message is displayed:
Windows cannot defragment this drive because a program has changed data on the drive.
It also says to scandisk

When trying to scandisk it starts but wont complete (left running over night)
can anyone please provide me with suggestions.
Any info will be greatly appreciated.

Hi Rebecca

The ME group is

microsoft.public.windowsme.general

You should be able to run a command prompt level scandisk at boot up if
you go to the startup options

Hope that helps

Try this little tutorial:

You have to do it in command mode. Read!

As I recall, run Scandisk from DOS. Hit F8 and do NOT load the Windows
GUI; i.e., load up to a DOS prompt. You have background processes
running under Windows that are updating files which interrupts
Scandisk's operation so it has to start over. Could be you have the the
Microsoft Office indexing application installed in your startup group
(which is pretty much worthless on end-user machines not used as file
servers). Whatever it is, it is interrupting Scandisk more than about
10 times after which Scandisk gives up. So don't bother with Windows
and just boot into DOS to run Scandisk from there.
