SP4 deployment

B

Bjorn

Can anyone help me?

I´m trying to deploy SP4 with update.msi. I use Unicenter
Software Delivery 3.1 for deployment. We have successfully
deployed SP3 with update.msi before.

When I try to install the package on a client computer
I'll get the following message:

"1638 - Another version of this product is already
installed. Installation of this version cannot continue.
[MSI001638]"

I've searched the web for a workaround without success.

My question is, are there any workarounds available for
this problem? Meaning I don't want to uninstall SP3 prior
to the installation.

Thanks

Hi Bjorn,

I heard there was an issue with the Update.msi on Service Pack 3 and it has
an update. I know you have successfully deployed Service Pack 3 but
encounter this issue with Service Pack 4. However, I think it is worth to
check if this file addresses this problem. Please refer to the following
article:

813807 "Another Version of this Product Is Already Installed" Error Message
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=813807

You can contact Microsoft Support Service for assistance to get this
update. Refer to http://support.microsoft.com/. Please be advised that if
you just request an update without any other questions, the service usually
will be no charge or will be refunded.

Also, this issue can be caused by the Unicenter Software Delivery if the
data it makes has problems. You can check with CA as well to see if this is
a problem.

Furthermore, I suggest you read the Service Pack deployment guide to check
the other deployment options.

Microsoft Windows 2000 Service Pack 4 Installation and Deployment Guide
http://www.microsoft.com/windows2000/downloads/servicepacks/sp4/spdeploy.htm

Please let me know if this solves this issue or if you need further
assistance. I look forward to hearing from you.

Thank you Eric!

I've read http://support.microsoft.com/?id=813807 witch
applies to SP3, finnish. I'm trying to deploy SP4, swedish.

The problem occurs only when I try to deploy SP4 with
update.msi to clients with SP3 installed with its
update.msi.

I have no problem when updating my clients with update.exe.

Thanks

Hi Bjorn,

I am pleased to hear that you can update the clients with update.exe. You
can use that to update the clients from a network share on the server. This
will work as well. You can consider any deployment option detailed from
that article.

Please feel free to let me know if there is anything I can do for you on
this issue or if you encounter any problems.
