SP3

I decided it was time to bite the bullet and install XP Pro SP3. I've been
googling a bit for information on the process and one of the things I found
is that it can mess up a machine with an AMD processor which is what I have,
an HP with AMD Athlon 64 Processor 3200+. What I haven't been able to find
out is whether there's a fix for this, or if I should just not do it.

If I can go ahead, the other thing I'm wondering is whether it's better to
install SP3 via Microsoft Update or to put the SP on a CD and install from
that.

Thanks for any advice.

Second question first:

In general, for major upgrades like a service pack, you're better off
having the complete installer, either on your hard drive or on a CD.

That said, if you have a stable internet connection and your previous
experience with service packs has been good - something tells me it is
-you'll probably do just fine to install from Windows Update.

First question:

The problem is that HP, and possibly other OEMs, deploy the same image
to Intel-based desktops that they do to AMD-based desktops. It also
appears that the problem is unique to the desktop image, since HP
AMD-based laptops have been unaffected by the problem.

Because the image for both Intel and AMD is the same, all have the
intelppm.sys driver installed and running. That driver provides power
management on Intel-based computers...but for an AMD-based computer, you
need amdk8.sys for that functionality.
