SP2

I have been thinking about upgrading my Windows Xp Pro system to service
pack 2. I am wondering is it worth it. As far as I can see SP2 just seems
to beef up the firewall built into windows. I use a good third party
firewall that does the job far better. Is there any need to install SP2?

SP2 is a solid, secure release. It is a major "Critical Update"
for Windows XP and updates over 5 million lines of code,
enabling much stronger security, stability, and affords a tad better
performance benefit. SP2 was extensively tested on hundreds of
thousands of various computer configurations over a period of
many, many months. I would encourage you to install it at your
earliest convenience since it renders SP1 virtually obsolete.

Yeah, and the fact that in 2005, probably around april or so, you won't be
able to do any more updates without first having SP2 installed anyway. I
would get it if I ran XP.

SP1 will be supported until September 2006. Lifecycle information is
available on the MS site.
