Why bother?

I have been thinking about upgrading my Windows Xp Pro system to service
pack 2. I am wondering is it worth it. As far as I can see SP2 just seems
to beef up the firewall built into windows. I use a good third party
firewall that does the job far better. Is there any need to install SP2?

It does more than just beef up the firewall (which, let's face it, wasn't
worth using in SP1). It contains plenty of system patches designed to
improve not only security but program stability system-wide, and contains a
few new features including "Data Execution Prevention", which can help
contain how viruses spread within a system. Upgrading is definitely worth
your while.

Over and above its highly -publicized new features, SP2 has many
changes, fixes and improvements.

I am NOT a fan of MS updates & manually update XPhome
even after SP2.See http://microscum.com/comsense/. I
use ZApro 2.

I was pleasantly surprised that SP2 + 12 other updates
were all done AT ONCE with no problems. Gerearally SP2
shuts XP DOWN so its not so open 2 everything.

I like new restrictions in IE on ActiveX & transferring
to new domain & restriction on code installed (DEP @
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/875352 .

I did CYA tho & tested SP2 om my X OS & imaged C: on my
Regular OS b4 installing it.

Just my 2¢ worth-Larry
Any advise is my attempt to contribute more than I have received but I can only assure you that it works on my PC. GOOD LUCK.

The firewall is least of the things it provides. It provides new
versions of most of the components of the system, reworked to remove
basic causes of vulnerabilities - many of which are not matters for
firewalls.
