SP2 upgrade problem

My brother's having problems installing SP2.

He gets the following error messages:

Service Pack 2 Setup could not backup to registry key
HKCR\WinHttp.WinHttpRequest.5./
to file C:\WINDOWS\$NtServicePackUninstall$\REG00362. 5: Access is denied.

and

Service Pack 2 Setup could not backup to registry key
HKCR\Microsoft.Update.AutoUpdate
to file C:\WINDOWS\$NtServicePackUninstall$\reg00362. 5 Access is denied.

Any suggestions?

Use the administrator account (as it seems he doesn't have exclusive rights
to install things as an admin does); in Pro, you can do this directly by
switching to that account. In Home, you have to logon to Safe Mode to do
this.

In Pro, at the logon screen simply type Administrator in the name box, and
hit enter (if there was never a Admin password set). If the Welcome screen
is used in Pro, then hit CTRL+ALT+DELETE twice to get the logon script.

In Home, reboot, and hit the F8 key during the BIOS POST (right before you
get the Windows splash screen), then select Safe Mode to logon to the Admin
account, again password rules apply whether or not one was set for it.

I thought this might be the problem but he does have administrator rights on
his account. He's using XP home so we tried doing the safe mode stuff (with
network support) but then we couldn't establish an internet connection. (He
uses one of those horrid USB broad band connections).

I tried looking for the SP2 upgrade as a single download (? for use by
system admin) that we could save and then run in safe mode but I couldn't
find it.

Would this be the best way to go? Any pointers?
