SP2 screen display problems after installation

Can anyone suggest a solution the following problem?

After I installed SP2 the right hand side of my screen
went black (obscuring the last inch of my desktop on the
right). So I altered my display settings (changed them
from 1024 by 768 pixels to 969 by 768 pixels) so that I
could at least see the right hand side of my desktop. But
I still have this one inch thick vertical black bar on
the right hand side of my screen (and now I have to live
with a smaller desktop.)

Maybe there is simple to fix, but so far I haven't
figured it out. Any suggestions would be very much
appreciated. Thanks.

Just a thought have you adjusted your monitor settings (via the monitor/hardware)?
It may need adjustment

Tim,

is your desktop now smaller or does the black stripe obscure
part of it?

In the latter case you probably want to upgrade your graphics
adapter driver to the latest version.

LCD Monitor? It sounds like it's failed.

The problem was the latter. So I downloaded a new video
driver from my PC manufacturer (Toshiba) and it fixed the
problem.

For reference (in case anyone else encounters this
problem) I am using a Toshiba Satellite 2410. The system
shipped with a NVIDIA GeForce4 420 Go video driver. I
went to the Toshiba technical support website and found
that they have an updated driver posted. So I downloaded
it and installed it. Problem fixed!

By the way, here was the initial response from
Microsoft's technical support:

"Dear Tim,

Thank you for choosing Online Support for your Microsoft
Technical Support offering. My name is Andrew and I will
be assisting you with this service request.

As I understand, the concern is that the display of the
system does not fit the monitor after installing Service
Pack 2. If I have misunderstood, please let me know. We
shall be working to resolve this specific issue through
the course of the case.

Based on my knowledge, Windows XP Service Pack 2 supports
many new display features, so usually upgrading to
Windows XP changes the device driver used by the monitor.

Usually manufacturers of monitors provide buttons to
adjust position, size, brightness, contrast as well as
the shape of the monitor screen. Although monitors are
manufactured by different third-party manufacturers, most
of them place the buttons right below the display screen.

Please try the steps above, and let me know the results
at your earliest convenience.

If you have any concerns with the steps provided or have
any further problems, please feel free to contact me.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Best regards,

Andrew Yao"

Tim,

good to know what worked. Thanks for reporting back!

This coincides with Kaylene's reply. They guessed that SP2
changed the video driver, and the new driver has different
monitor timing, so your picture size changed and you would have
to justify the monitor.

Without knowing the nature of the black stripe, this was a
reasonable assumption, but they happened to guess wrong, which
happens quite often in online support. Happens to me too, all
the time.

Actually, my previous posting was slightly misleading.
The driver I downloaded was not an "updated" driver. It
was actually released on 08/19/02. Regardless of this, it
still fixed the problem.
