Here in my very unpleasant experience with SP2 update:
I have 1.5 year old HP Pavilion 754n with XP and SP2 installed. Everything
was working perfectly. Installed MovieShop video editing software (what a
crap) which eventually forced me to reformat HD.
Restored to original HP supplied state. I do not have Win XP CD; everything
is preinstalled. Spent next 12 hours to installed all the highly customized
applications, including AutoCad, video editing, graphic, camera stuff, PDA,
GPS, Mapping ..... Everything worked perfectly and I gain a lot of room
because of the clean reinstallation. I was happy, until about 3rd WinXp auto
update. When I restarted I saw only the background picture and nothing else.
No Icons, Start.... I could only go to Task Manager (Ctr-Del-Del), but and
nothing was running. Tried to Browse to
C:\windows\system32\restore\rstrvi.exe, which is MS System restore to allow
you to go back to previously installed software, but it was hidden. Show
hidden files was on, so I do not know why it was hidden. Could not do it.
I tried several times to restart. Nothing.
Finally I left computer on and went to work. When I came home everything was
on. All my desk top was as it is supposed to be. I was extremely glad that I
do not have to waste my life anymore. My joy did not last very long. I had
to wait about 10 min after any click for something to happen. Eventually I
restarted and it was exactly the same. 5 to 10 min between actions.
Eventually I powered off, powered on , F8, and restored to previous
configuration. Restarted and everything runs perfectly. Went to Control
Panel, Program remove and uninstalled three SP2 files.
NO more SP2, at least for a while. As I read in the news groups, I am not
the only one. I thing that is better for me to take chance that someone will
hack into my computer that to risk that it will be disabled by MS service
pack.
Just let you know my experience.
