SP2 Installed Or Not?

A

Arpan

I am working on WinXP Pro. Today I downloaded Service Pack2. Though it
got downloaded successfully, while the installation was going on, there
was an electricity failure due to which the installation got aborted
abruptly (the "cleanup" process was going on at that time i.e. almost
75% of the installation was complete).

Now when I visit http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/sp2/default.mspx,
sometimes the page says that SP2 is already installed but on other
occasions, it says that SP2 isn't installed in my WinXP Pro machine.
This is confusing me - has SP2 really been installed in my machine?

Note that when I right-click "My Computer" on the "Desktop" & click
"Properties", under the "General" tab, it says:

System:

Microsoft Windows XP
Professional
Version 2002
Service Pack 2

Also when I open "Add/Remove Programs" from the "Control Panel", I find
"Windows XP Service Pack 2" listed there. Apart from this, under the
"Tools" menu in IE6, two new menu items (Pop-up Blocker & Manage
Add-ons) also have got added which weren't there when SP2 wasn't
installed in my machine.

Now how do I make sure that SP2 has indeed been installed successfully
in my WinXP Pro machine since the above mentioned web page sometimes
says that SP2 is installed & sometimes it says that SP2 isn't installed
in my machine?

Thanks,

Arpan

Your system is in an unknown state and the power outage messed things up.
SP2 is not properly installed. The smartest thing for you to do is to
uninstall SP2 - hopefully you can do this - and start over. Consider
purchasing an Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS). A decent one for a single
computer (not a server) should cost around $60USD.

The Popup Blocker and Manage Add-ons are part of SP2.

One way to easily see what fixes are correctly installed and a lot more is
to download, install and rund the free Belarc Advisor. http://www.belarc.com

Hi, Chuck. I don't think the OP's issue is really seeing what is installed.
Since he had the power outage in the middle of upgrading his operating
system to SP2, he says things aren't working right. This is no surprise.
Rather than try and fight all the little fires that are cropping up and
will crop up in the future, I think it is a better solution to try and
start fresh, no matter what the system says is installed.

That was my reasoning for my suggestion he uninstall SP2 and start over.

Malke,

I agree with your comments. However, the Belard Advisor will indicate
whether SP 2 was correctly installed or not.

These words appear in their analysis:
Marks a HotFix that verifies correctly Marks a HotFix that fails
verification
(note that failing hotfixes need to be reinstalled) Unmarked HotFixes
lack the data to allow verification

I would suggest that you assume that SP2 is not properly installed. To
that, you should remove what was installed and try again.

This page contains information on removing XP SP2, including from the
command line:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/875355

I'm not sure if you downloaded the entire SP2, but doing so is a better
plan if you have the drive space. The complete SP2 install file is about
250 meg. In case the install fails, you don't have to download again; and,
you can use this file to create a slipstreamed install CD. If you need to
do a repair install or reinstall later, SP2 will already be in place.

Why do you need to remove what is already there? Just reinstall SP2,
preferably using the network install file here ...

Because you can't be sure, since the install was interrupted by a power
outage, how much was installed or if it was installed correctly, or if files
were copied completely or were corrupted.

The easiest way to be sure that the SP is installed properly now is to
remove it before reinstalling.
