Source of copies of Service Packs for download or on disk?

R

Robert Macy

I have a purchased copy of WinXP, used it so infrequently that I never
registered it, so never installed any service packs - when they were
available.

Since I now need to set up a 'sacrificial' PC to connect to the
internet, I need copies of Service Packs to add.

Don't want to sit through process of install downloading only, NEED
copies just in case.have to do a fast reinstall from scratch.

So where to get SP1, SP2, SP3 on a disk? Or at least download these
versions form my own archive?

but, thank you very much am downloading SP1a

Website is not clear. Do I need only SP3 to follow on? Or, must they
be installed in sequence?

I always assumed that any SP would include the earlier
versions, but that page seems to say otherwise. It says you
need 1a *or* 2 before installing SP3. So I would download
SP2 and SP3 -- skip SP1a -- and then install 2 and 3 in order.

The downloads from that page go to links "for IT professionals",
which just means that they're links to download the actual, full
installer package rather than the web installer. You can then
write those two SPs to CD and will have everything you need
in the future.

SP2 contains 1a, so you can skip that one. I don't know if SP3 will
install with just 1a installed or not, I've never tried it, and SP3 has
never installed for me without something earlier.

Also, if you want to access MS's update site, you have to have SP3 these
days.

1x is not needed.
Install 2 before 3 so you get proper usb support.
Then 3 for decent networking support.
Install IE 7 or 8 after you install sp3, not before.

Makes sense, SP1a was only 1.8MB while SP3 is 316MB !!!

Thanks for the 'heads up" on waiting to install apps *until* all SP's
are in place.

If you ever need to "Repair Install", you'll need to remove IE 7 or IE 8
before doing so. Although, one poster reported not removing them,
doing a Repair Install, IE6 was then broken, and when the original IE 7 or
IE 8 was installed on top of the mess, things started working again.
So unlike perhaps some other versions of IE, there can be some issues
with Repair Installing over top of them. At the very least, you
should be keeping track (somewhere), of what IE versions have
been installed, in case the mess needs to be reproduced later.

SP1a might be the "MS Java" removal thing. Part of the
settlement, was removing the MS version of Java from WinXP.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Microsoft_Java_Virtual_Machine

"Service Pack 1 (SP1) for Windows XP was released on September 9, 2002.
It contained post-RTM security fixes and hot-fixes, compatibility updates,
optional .NET Framework support, and enabled technologies for new devices
such as Tablet PCs. It also included the Microsoft Java virtual machine.

On February 3, 2003, Microsoft released Service Pack 1 (SP1) again as
Service Pack 1a (SP1a). This release removed Microsoft's Java virtual
machine as a result of the lawsuit with Sun Microsystems."

Does that mean, I need to install SP! first? before moving on to SP2?

Historically, my repair has been to format the section of disk,
Reinstall everything, always seemed to work.

If you have WinXP Gold installer CD, it's my understanding you need
*something*, before installing SP3. There seem to be a variety of
opinions on the subject.

The thing is, if you do them sequentially, the only "damage" would be
a bit of extra disk space usage.

This article has an opinion as well.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_XP

"Windows XP Service Pack 3 is a cumulative update of all previous
service packs for XP. The service pack installer checks

HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Windows\CSDVersion

registry key to see if has a value greater than or equal to 0x100,
and if it does it will allow the update to proceed. Otherwise it
will prompt to install either XP SP1 or SP2. Since SP1 is no longer
available for full download, it would need to be downloaded using
Windows Update. The other option is to manually change the registry key,
in essence fooling the installer into thinking SP1 is already installed.[72]

However, it is possible to slipstream SP3 into the Windows XP setup
files at any service pack level, including the original RTM version,
without any errors or issues."

Reference #72 is here. "Installing Windows XP Service Pack 3"

Info on slipstreaming and preparing a new CD, is here, if you
ever need it.

A better bet might be to make a SP3 slipstreamed install disk, to avoid this all
in the future.
