How to tell is XP install disk has SP2?

AppreciativeNovice

I have an XP Pro install disk that I bought a few years ago. I'm trying to
use Boot Camp to install Windows on my Mac for some work-related stuff. I
see that you need a version of XP that includes Service Pack 2. How can I
tell whether or not this disk has SP2? And I guess the next question is will
I be able to install it on this machine since it was install on my old, dead
Dell?

Thank you!

It'll only work on a Dell. That copy of XP died with your Dell.

You cannot use an OEM copy of Windows on any other PC. It is tied to
the PC it came with. If you do a major upgrade on that PC, you have to
reactivate Windows, probably over the phone to a Microsoft support
person. You need a retail copy of XP that you can use on any one PC at
a time. If you install it on another PC, it has to be removed from the
first PC.

If you want what you posted to be true and not a lie, change every "can"
to "may" and the "has to" to "should". The reason that a Dell XP won't
work has *nothing* to do with the license and *everything* to do with
hardware.

If you have a generic OEM copy of XP, it *can* be installed on more than
one computer and it *can* be moved to another computer, regardless of
what the EULA says you *may* do or not do.

Hi,
Either of this method can do:
1- Right click on the Icon of "My Computer" and select properties. Under
General Tab you will see the service listed if it is SP2 or SP3.

2- Another is to open a run command by clicking Start >> Run >> Type in:
msinfo32 click [OK]

Note: you can see it also inAdd/Remove programs (you need to check the box
for show all updates, up in the corner!).

Did you buy the XP Pro disk at a store
and is it a "Retail", "OEM" version or did
the CD come with the Dell computer?

Course, if you had read the post, you would know that XP has not been
installed so your two methods won't work or are even possible.

You cannot use that OEM CD, no matter what version of WinXP it installs.

As the OP didn't state whether is was OEM branded, OEM generic or
Retail, your statement is pretty stupid, ass wipe.

Read the labeling on the CD. Or check the versions of the files it
contains against a known SP2 system. No other way.

Depends. Was it a retail license that you purchased and independently
installed on the Dell? If so, then yes. Or are you thinking of trying
to illegally use a Dell OEM license that came with the Dell? If so, it
probably won't even install, being locked to a Dell BIOS.

OK, now that you know that you can not use an OEM disk if received with the
old Dell, if you purchased the Pro install disk as a retail product, the
disk itself should tell you what SP version is installed on the disk, I.e.,
Microsoft Windows XP with SP 2 or something like that.

While not definitive, if you look at the I386 file folder on the CD SP 2
files should have creation dates of 2004 and SP3 should have dates of 2007
on them.

You can always slipstream the latest service pack onto the earlier versions
(gold or SP1 or SP1a) to create a newer SP version. Google for slipstream
windows XP service packs for more information.
