SP2 installation woes

Hi all

I'm trying to install SP2 on my girlfriend's Packard Bell PC. I
re-installed XP using the packard bell CDs (basically an image) but SP2
refuses to install. It downloads and appears to install, but once Update is
finished, it just says close and doesn't ask for the computer to be
restarted. Once I restart manually, there is no sign of SP2 and it is again
listed in Update as something that needs to be installed.

There are one or two other issues aswell - the Automatic Updates service
switches itself off after every boot, despite me having tried the MS article
to reinstate the permissions for it.

Also, the Applications log is permanently corrupted. I'm not sure what
that's about either.

Can anyone help? THis is really frustrating as I've just upgraded to Win XP
Pro on my own machine and have had no problems whatsoever with XP and other
updates.

Thanks in advance!

MS do seem to have started charging for shipping and handling charges? Any
idea as to what kind of charge is being levied?

The reason I suggested using a CD is that Laurence has been trying to
download and his attempts have not been successful. Using a CD avoids
problems caused by a slow internet connection.

An obvious way around the charges is to borrow a CD from a friend as they
can be used on any Windows XP machine. Millions of copies must be floating
around. Why for several months there was a free copy with most PC mags sold
in the UK.

Hope this helps.

Go here and download the SP2 update to HDD instead of going via
Windows Update. Then run it from the download folder.

http://www.softwarepatch.com/windows/index.html

Don't need a CD then and by passes Windows updates which seem to be
causing your problems.

You don't want to put SP2 on a system that is having problems. It needs
to be running well first. Is the system free of malware? That is the #
one culprit.

Quite an inducement to download if you can. Of course that makes unwanted
used CD's a saleable item.

Thanks for the info.

Well yes but who wants to buy these CDs? I have lots of OEM XP SP1 CDs
given to me by HP but I haven't got a clue what to do with them! I am
using two as coasters so that my £50 desk does not get damaged but the
rest are simply occupying the space in my small office in Central
London!

I downloaded the single SP2 file (~200mb) but it doesn't install correctly
either. It got to the Inventory... stage then the window just disappeared
and that was the end of that. No error messages or anything.

In Windows Update, if I bypass the SP2 installation and go to Other
Updates, it lists SP1 (!) as an update. So I attempted to install that in
case it was required before an SP2 install, but it doesn't appear to have
gone in (there is no mention of it in System Properties). Interestingly,
however, there is a %NtServicePackUninstall% folder in the Windows directory,
which leads me to believe something has been installed.

The computer is a bit of a mess now - I found some virii lurking around, and
now nothing in the Control Panel will execute.

The OEM discs didn't just install a vanilla Windows installation, they
automatically installed all kinds of drivers and stuff which I'd rather it
didn't - I much prefer to sort out a vanilla install myself than not knowing
what exactly the setup has copied. I might see if it's possible to get the
discs to install a basic copy of windows which I can then tweak myself.

Yeah looks like its a dead PC Laurence, a full reformat / re-install
is probably the way to go.

I appear (touch wood) to have fixed the problems. There were many
outstanding pre-SP1 updates needed on the machine, not to mention SP1 itself
(extremely old installation, obviously) so I downloaded all the updates to
take it to just-before-SP1-standard, then I retried the SP2 installation and
it worked fine. Everything appears to be working correctly now and the
machine's stable again. Still having a problem with the Applications log
getting corrupted, though - does anyone have any ideas about that? Clearing
it doesn't appear to help.

Thanks for your help.

In Event Viewer are there any Warning or Errors Reports.in the System
( or Application logs if at all accessible ) relating to the time you
encounter
the problem,. Please post copies.

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Administrative Tools, Event
Viewer.
When researching the meaning of the error, information regarding Event ID,
Source and
Description are important.

HOW TO: View and Manage Event Logs in Event Viewer in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;enus;308427&Product=winxp

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double
click on the error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a
button resembling two pages. Double click the button and close Event
Viewer. Now start your message(email) and do a paste into the body of the
message. This will paste the info from the Event Viewer Error Report
complete with links into the message. Make sure this is the first paste
after
exiting from Event Viewer.

Hope this helps.
