DVD writer wont work after SP2 installation

I am using a Packard Bell Laptop with a toshiba dvd writer (-R; -RW). It has
always worked perfectly, but after installing SP2 the DVD will not recognise
blank DVD media, although it reads previously written DVD -R media perfectly.

After SP2, the system sees blank media as a CD, but with no free space and
zero files. I performed a system restore to a time prior to SP2, and the dvd
works perfectly again.
