SP2 install stops IE6 from loading

George Todgham

Twice in nthe past two days I installed and rolled back
(using add/remove programs) SP2. First time relied on
Automatic Updates, second time used 272MB download from
MS support site. After SP2 finished installing and
machine rebooted, I was able to use Outlook Express to
fetch/send email and could use VPN connection to connect
to LAN at work, but when I try to launch IE6 the splash
screen never appears and subsequent attempts to load
Outlook Express or Control Panel are ignored.

ctl-alt-delete/task mgr shows IE6 as an active
application, but if I try to restart computer, I get "IE6
not responding" dialog. Must force program to end for
restart to proceed.

Prior to installing sp2, and after uninstall of sp2 IE6
help/about reports version 6.0.2800.1106xpsp2.030422-1633
UpdateVersions:;SP1;Q328970;Q324929;Q810847;

What should I try next?

George,

a repair installation of Windows XP. Please read the details in
http://www.michna.com/kb/WxSP2.htm first.
