Hi,

I'm trying to install XP SP2, but it always has 2 errors when backing up the
registry. I found a KB Article (873148) which covers this problem, but I
can not edit the permissions on 2 of the Registry keys;

HKCR\.msi and HKCR\.msp

Both those are, of course, Windows Installer keys. When I go to open either
1 I get "Access is Denied". When I go to Permissions for those 2, it says
"Unable to view current permisions, but you may change them".
Well, I make the changes to the permisions, but it absolutely will not save
the changes... I still get access is denied.

I have installed the latest Windows Installer 3.1 v2, but it still has not
changed this problem. I am using an account with Computer Administrator
priviledges.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

At starting computer, tap the F8 key, select safe mode with networking, enter
windows as administrator,adjust as needed.

Hi Andrew,

I have already tried to adjust as required in Safe Mode, but same result.
Those 2 reg keys refuse to have their permissions modified by conventional
means. I am a technician and pretty darn good at fixing XP problems, but I
don't know everything, and this one has me stumped.

Thanks for your time,

Mike
