Hello,
After a long period I have returned to trying to resolve a problem updating
Win XP Pro SP 1 to SP2 on my Dell Dimension 4600C. I followed all the
instructions to prep the system, formatted the HD AND reinstalled SP pro SP1.
Then I reinstalled the HD AND System state from the backup utility. After
some missteps including interrupting a backout I got the Access Denied error
and dealt with per KB article 873148 and determined the registry entry with
incorrect permissions as key HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet
Explorer\Main\FeatureControl\FEATURE_DISABLE_MK_PROTOCOL. However when I
checked the registry under MAIN folder there is no folder or selection for
FEature Control. Also there was problems with MCAfee virus so couldn't update
and WEbroot Spysweeper is indicated as corrupt and I couldn't get online.
Does anyone have any idea what was happening and how to resolve?
Do I need to re-format and start over from scratch?
Another respondent said he had a similar problem and said he resolved it by
not using the regular MS Update for SP2 but apparently used the update for IT
Professionals and Developers. The site says that is for network installations
but the guy said he booted in safe mode and ran the installation after
downloading that file and it worked. (MIne is a stand alone desktop). Any
ideas if this sounds right?
Thanks, God bless
