Problem upgrading xp pro to sp2 Access Denied Error
Pardon the length of this description but felt details might be necessary
Summary of issue
I am having problems upgrading my Dell Dimension 4600C desktop from Win XP
pro SP1 to SP2. Before that due to problems I formatted the HD and
reinstalled Win XP Pro SP1. I then reinstalled the HD and System state from
the backup utility .I followed all the instructions to update from SP1 to SP2
–to prepare and install as given by both Dell and MS KB articles including
updating BIOS Etc..and not only not able to install but problems seem to
mushroom.

History of issue
On the first attempt to re-install OS, I had problems (been while-going by
memory on all steps I took) because upon newly creating one partition from an
original 2, I had to recreate the boot.ini file to reflect that. Then trying
to update to SP2 at one stage-don’t recall if previous or another attempt
the install failed and I made mistake of cancelling the backout to uninstall.
This seemed to mess things up, so if recall may have just reinstalled XP OS
again with another format and reinstalled HD and system state.

Current status of problem
Then on further attempts to update to SP2 current issues started where keep
getting the “Access is Denied†error message which I dealt with per MS KB
article 873148. On last previous attempt to reinstall, when last got Access
denied message, I left my system overnight before allowing it to backout and
uninstall, and my system shut down during night automatically for some
reason-so uninstall not done. Not sure if that messed things up as before.
But last followed instructions per above KB article and got to Step 2E to
find out the registry entry for which it is supposed to have incorrect
permissions. The key shown in the setupapi.log file was:
Setting registry value HKLM\Software\Microsoft\ Internet Explorer
\MAIN\FeatureControl\FEATURE_DISABLE_MK_PROTOCOL
However, when I check the registry, under the MAIN folder there is no folder
or selection for Feature Control.

Further problems now include:
*Everytime I boot up McAfee Virus Scan message comes up indicating an error
initializing Active Shield-may be registry issue. Now I can’t even open the
McAfee Security console to check if even running and can’t update virus files
* Before I could get online but couldn’t get onto Microsoft website
newsgroups-pop ups kept being blocked even though set to allow
* Now can ‘t go online-I have cable modem and Device Manager shows
controller ok but the connections in Network Connections not there.
* My Webroot Spysweeper indicates the app is corrupted and need to reinstall.

Questions:
1. Anyone have any idea what is happening or is the problem?
2. Could this be a virus-virus signatures updated probably but Virus Scan
seems to be corrupted?
3. Could the XP OS be corrupted again from the failure to back out of the SP
install or some reason? How can you tell if an OS may be corrupted?
4. Would it be best to reinstall XP and start over(which I would prefer not
to due to the difficulty in getting app files restored)? If so,
a. Since my original OS was XP SP1, can I just re-format and reinstall XP
Pro SP2? Will I be able to restore my HD from backup if so? The system state?
b. Although would prefer to avoid if possible, would it be best to just
restore my apps individually from disk rather than from backup utility? If I
do that can I restore my data files from backup considering above?

Many thanks for any assistance, God bless
Van

Hi there VanS,

Here's my recommendation:

1) Download and install Windows Live OneCare, it's available as a 90 day
trial currently. You can get it from http://www.windowsonecare.com/
2) Use Windows Live OneCare to perform a backup of all of your user files.
Mind you that the backup is user specific by default, and if you have
additional user files that need to be backed up, you will need to select them
manually, a manual selection is provided after the initial user specific
selection screen.
3) Format your system and reinstall using your Windows Service Pack 1 CD.
4) Immediately go to the Microsoft Updates site at
http://update.microsoft.com . This is the Microsoft Update site, which is a
bit different than the Windows Update. Works much nicer:)
5) Re-download and install Windows Live OneCare and restore your data.

Sometimes the Service Pack 2 update gets a bit goofy depending on what you
install. I personally am inclined to blame McAfee. But that's just me.

If anyone knows of a simpler solution, pleae post! And you might want to
seriously consider purchasing the full version of Live OneCare, it honestly
rocks!

Best Regards,

~Will
