Upgrading XP SP1 Media Center to SP2 crashed.

Hello,

I was helping my father to upgrade his Toshiba P15-S470 notebook/laptop
(512 MB of RAM; 80 GB HDD, media center, 17", etc.)'s Windows XP Media
Center. Before the upgrade, it had IE 6.0 SP1 and all the updates (could
never install the Media Center 2004 update, but my dad never used that
option so it didn't matter) for SP1. Since MS stopped supporting it
since last month, I decided to upgrade it to SP2 to keep it updated.

I made a backup of the HDD just in case, cleared cached files, temp
folders/directories, etc. I disabled NAV 2004's AutoProtect and anything
else (e.g., Adobe Updater) that looked unnecessary and could cause
problems. Then, I used the XP SP2 upgrade CD (not the one downloaded
online) that I got from MS for free and from a couple years ago.

The upgrade seem to have taken over two hours (took a nap since it was
taking so long and I was tired, but the HDD was busy crunching away
during the whole process). After waking up four hours later, I checked
the upgrade and noticed it (upgrader) crashed during finishing and
cleaning up part.

I tried to dig in the c:\windows\ for any updated logs for clues. In
svcpack.log file, I saw:
7184.203: Files To Attach C:\WINDOWS\Temp\WAT13A9.tmp
C:\WINDOWS\Temp\WAT13A9.tmp
7184.266: Waiting For watson First time ...

I uploaded a zip file with all the newest log files from the upgrade and
before I rebooted to complete the SP2 upgrade:
http://www.savefile.com/files/289226 ...

I rebooted and noticed the OS was still working (was worried that it was
hosed). Its splash screen no longer said Media Center (just MS Windows
XP and the graphic loader). Chkdsk ran (probably from chkdsk /r /f
attempts before I started the SP2 upgrade and they never ran), but found
no errors. Inside Windows seem to work. Right now, I am grabbing the
left over updates from Windows Update service.

Should I be concerned? I'd like to know if the SP2 was a full sucess. I
have no idea where the crash happened. Thank you in advance. :)

Start button --> RUN --> winver --> OK.
Does it say something similar to:

Version 5.1 (Build 2600.xpsp_sp2_gdr.050301-1519 : Service Pack 2)

??

The change in the boot loader screen is normal. For whatever reason
(marketing?) Microsoft backed away frmo having an individual loader for
every version of Windows XP.

I'm suffering from the same dilemma. I recently upgraded 2 computers, a
laptop and a desktop. Both suffered the same fate as yours. I inquired in
the group here, and never got a single response. I've been using both for a
number of weeks now, and all appears to be fine. SP2 seems to have
installed completely. Mine crashed in the same location as yours, during
the cleanup process.

I inquired as to what was being cleaned up, and if it was possible to finish
the cleanup manually (i.e. delete the leftover files by hand).
Unfortunately, I know as much now as I did before inquiring...

Well, I didn't check winver earlier, but I did check via Explorer's and
IE6.0's Help About. Both said SP2. After playing with the OS for an
hour, it seems OK?

I will check winver later on. I need sleep (6 AM!).

Unfortunately - lots of things could have gone wrong.
I have seen - myself - SP2 die during cleanup. Has not caused an issue on
any of the machines I have seen - because at that point - the work is done,
just the mess still exists. Like an "after-party" - when everyone leaves
the host to do the cleanup.

If you want to manually clean up after the installtion of SP2 - you can
somewhat.

And if everything is working - then you are not 'suffering'. *grin*

Thanks for the link, will look into that... As far as winver goes, I've got
exactly what you posted in a previous reply, so I must assume that all is
well...

Interesting, so this is a known issue. I guess SP2 installer is old
(came out in 2004) and needs to be updated.

With computers one should always be concerned with what's lurking around the
corner. The real question is should you do something different. Two
options, if it's running ok then go with it. Second choice is to slipstream
SP2 into the installation media, then do a clean install with the new
installation CD, reinstall programs, then restore data from backups.
