SP2 Incompatible with DSL

D

Drew Meyer

I have just informed by the front-line tech for SBC DSL
that "Windows XP2 is Incompatible with DSL", that slow
browsing followed by disconnection will occur. I was
advised to uninstall SP2.

Can you believe it! This was SBC/Yahoo!

C

Curt

Don't believe it. I'm with SBC DSL and have installed SP2 on several systems
with no problems at all.

How about this one, Drew: because I couldn't find anyone at HP Parts, Hp
Sales, or HP Tech support to come up with the part number for a hard
drive cage to hold a second hard drive, I ended up talking to an idiot
posing as a case manager at HP Corporate, Menlo Park. He had the gall
to tell me that HP doesn't support putting a second hard drive into
their computers! I countered with the obvious: millions of PC's are out
there with multiple hard drives, AND the upgrade manual that came with
my new Pavilion had 2 pages of instructions for adding a second hard
drive. Part of those instructions tell the user to obtain a "cage" for
mounting the second drive, if one is not already installed. It took me
2 weeks and 3+ hours of phone calls to get the correct part number. The
person that helped me was a SENIOR case manager...
Armed with the part number I called the Parts people back and lo and
behold, they said that part number was good, it was back ordered, but
expected to ship in 2 days anyway. I received the part within a week
and all is well with respect to my 2nd hard drive installation.

Moral of the story: tech support is bad, and getting worse with each
passing year. I'm more likely than not to get bogus answers to any
computer related questions.

Another example: I have an Athlon 64, which doesn't run at 100% speed
unless it needs to. I didn't know it would "idle" so was concerned when
the speed showed up as 997Mhz instead of 2.0 Ghz under My Computer,
Properties. I called AMD and the guy there said it sounded like a
Windows issue. He said nothing about the variable speed feature of the
64. so I went back to Circuit city to see what the other HP PC's showed
for their speeds. Some read full speed and some showed slower, like
mine. I decided to investigate the matter further upon returning home,
and wouldn't you know it, as soon as the PC is given something useful to
do, like play a movie, the speed comes up to 2.0 Ghz. I then went to
the AMD web site and read up on the 64's features. Sigh...

Drew, I have XP Prof on both desk and lap. SBCGLOBAL DSL and Yahoo sent out
an email to SBC Yahoo users to download SP2 so the tech was was wrong..
There was an issue that was rectified by SP2 and they SBC YAHOO wanted SP2
installed. All ok on mine.

I'm with Wanadoo here in the UK and they also have problems with SP2, when
starting up my computer it now takes up to 5 minutes before I get a ADSL
signal. After that everything works fine,

I'm in the same boat -- have SBC/Yahoo DSL and SP2 was a nightmare --
browsing turned slow as molasses. After talking to 2 SBC techs (in India!)
who said SP2 incompatible w/SBC DSL, I uninstalled SP2, and DSL works fine
again. But now have new problem -- uninstalling SP2 messed up my display
graphics and I'm having heck of a time restoring settings because I'm not
certain where to look. Anybody have any help with this??? I've tried control
panel -- changed resolution; decreased hardware acceleration; double-checked
Intel graphics driver & hardware compatibility. Web pages look "naked" -- no
background color and HTML looks half-baked. TMIA.

XP is compatible with Most DSL services, just maybe not with SBC DSL! It is
not XP, or SP2, fault but SBC's.

How would techs in India know whether or not SBC DSL was compatible
with anything? SBC DSL works just fine with SP2 installed. You
probably just don't know to configure the new security settings and
firewall. SP2 seems to be the "new excuse" for knowledge lacking tech
support personnel to blame everything on.

Excuse me, CS and Yves but I am not blaming anyone -- SBC techs or
Microsoft!! I couldn't care less about the origins of the problems. I just
want to fix it. I know I need help with this issue and asked for it --
unless, of course, you didn't bother to read my post properly. And the SBC
techs were unable to resolve this issue.
If you are not prepared to provide that assistance more efficiently than
SBC did, then why are you bothering to reply and wasting my time? Thanks so
much for your "assistance." Very reassuring.

The point here "lj" is that the SBC supposed techs know not what
they're talking about. Telling you to uninstall SP2 is an excuse for
them to get rid of you on the phone. I have no idea what your problem
is nor does anyone else. All I can tell you is that there are
numerous people using SBC DSL, Verizon DSL, and Cable DSL with SP2
installed and have no problems whatsoever, but if you're happy with
uninstalling SP2 to get your DSL working, be my guest.....

SBC Yahoo DSL has a piece of their own connection manager
software, include that in the XP SP2 firewall and it works
like a charm.

Stupid, ignorant and lazy CSR always say that the problem is
MS because they can get away with blaming MS. The people
who call tech support are by definition, unable to
understand the facts, sort of like Democrats at a Kerry
rally. Or ABC, NBC, CBS, CNN, PBS NPR telling you the truth.

100% on the debate, er press conference. Did you notice
that the questions posed to Kerry were softballs while Bush
was not given a softball once?

I watched the NYY win. Then I went to bed.

Glad you like my humor. If you get a chance, ask Kerry how
much research he and his BILLIONAIRE wife have personally
supported on stem cells or is only somebody else's money he
is willing to spend to get votes.

When the UN sanctions Iran, N. Korean and maybe Syria over
WMD and they threaten "serious and grave consequences" will
those nations take the UN seriously and enter real
settlements if Kerry is President. He has indicated that
unless he has 100% backing he will do nothing. For all of
George Bush's faults (signing CFR [so much for the 1st],
giving lip service to AWB[what 2nd Amendment], not closing
the Mexican border, he has waged a war on terror that has
been successful in two former terrorist states and has
prevented dozens of attacks that were planned on American
embassies and in this country. Is GWB perfect, no only I am
perfect, but Kerry is a disaster since he has credibility
with less than 50% of the people in the USA and non of the
terrorists in the world will give him any mind. They have
tested GWB and he has killed [directed the killing] on
terrorists around the world, with the cooperation of many
nations, he has passed the test. If Kerry wins, the
terrorists will test him, of that I'm sure. Will the test
be only an embassy bombing, or perhaps something more than a
nuisance. like a chemical weapon in the BART station or
maybe a high school in New Jersey?
