SP2 cannot install

Thanks for the suggestion, but restoring didn't work.
I tried May 22nd, and I got a message after restart
that the restore didn't succeed. I then tried May 27th,
the backup made in preparation for the SP2 update,
I believe. But I got the same error message on the
subsequent restart.

OK, try this...

Delete C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log

Run SFC /SCANNOW

If it comes up with components it could not fix...

Copy CBS.log and open CBS - Copy.log

Go and look for "Beginning Verify and Repair" and copy/paste from there to the end of the file.

Then post it here and we can see what's going on.

So I deleted the CBS.log file, ran sfc /scannow, and
of course, there was no more CBS.log file. So how can
I open it?

Running SFC /SCANNOW generates a new CBS.log. Copy CBS.log as you can not
open it directly. Open the copy of it.

OK. It wasn't there before, but it appeared this time. Here it is:

In order to install Vista SP2. You must already have Vista SP1 on your
computer for it to update to SP2! Otherwise it will *NOT* work!!

If you had been reading this thread, you'd know that
SP1 is already installed, and the OS and a dl'd SP1 installation
package both say so. The PC came with Vista Business/SP1
pre-installed, and the re-installation DVD is for Vista Biz/SP1.
Something tells the SP2 installation package that SP1 is
missing.

Stop already with this CBS.log business. Issues are not built around that log. If
you do not know any different way of trying to help an OP then do not ask for this
log. You do not help and give an answer even after the unsuspecting OP's post it .
So please do not ask for this.
