if I don't install SP2?

I have been unable to install Vista's SP2. Otherwise,
the system runs fine and all previous updates have been
installed. Will the system be lacking something if I just
continue with normal updates?

Short term, probably not. Longer term, SP1 and older will likely cease
to be supported by future updates just as was done with XP and earlier
OSes.

If Vista/SP1 has all the updates, it's equivalent to
Vista/SP2, isn't it? So continuing to install updates
would be equivalent to updating Vista/SP2. Or not?
If I have to re-install the OS, I'd re-install Vista/SP1 and
then install SP2 - which presumably would work - and
then I'd install the updates to Vista/SP2.
Is there something I'm missing?

Service packs are more than just a collection of previous updates.

Some future updates will specifically look for the proof that SP2 has been
installed. It occurred with Windows XP and it will occur with Vista.

I guess that seals it - I'll spend next weekend re-installing Vista/SP1,
and then SP2, and then all the drivers and apps and dl'd utilities and
AV/firewall. Who said Windows wasn't fun?

In terms of security updates, generally yes. However, there is
generally a lot more that goes into a service pack then just security
and critical bug fixes.

I think there might be one or two required patches that you'll need to
bring the servicing stack up to date (although SP2's installer probably
takes care of that for you)

It gives you something to do. When Windows 7 is released I will be busy for
months. (-:

Before the reinstall you might want to check with the PC manufacturer, if
Laptop or if large oem, eg Dell / Hp that there are no critical driver
updates required, and any other HW manufacturers for the same, that might be
preventing the installation of sp2
