SP2 and Norton

Ake Blomberg

After installing SP2 for Windows XP I get a message
at startup saying that Norton antivirus is installed,
but its status cannot be obtained. What's wrong?
My Norton is up to date.

Cheers,
Ake

you don't state what version (2003, 2004) of Norton you are running. If
you are running 2004, simply run Liveupdate and it will download and install
the WMI update so that Norton will integrate into the new Windows Security
Center. If you are running an earlier version, you can download and install
the patch manually...

Not a good idea to get files from unauthorized sources.
If this is legitimate, the files would be legitimately available
directly from Symantec instead of a shady website.
Do NOT trust such sites for data especially something as important as
your anti virus application.

I generally tend to agree with you, but I have loaded this patch on three
machines that have Norton AntiVirus 2003 installed and it DOES solve the
problem!

If it is not from Symantec, it is NOT legitimate.
Also you should look closer, it is from neowin.net , NOT Symantec as
you suggest.
Give the direct link to Symantec if it exists.
That is the only reliable link.

It may be a valid file, but I don't trust that site for such an
important file taking his past history into consideration.
I doubt Symantec authorises this.

also I spoke to a symantec tech and he said he was not sure if the patch was
being issued for 2003 products. He said Symantec was "thinking about it"

Robin;
Unfortunately I think it is being used as a way to get people to
upgrade their anti virus.
But since this feature was not available until SP-2, it is no real
loss since functionality is not lost.

In these days of security awareness, people need to be fully aware of
where files come from.
Something as critical as a file that affects the anti virus program
can have serious consequences if received from an illegal source.
People need to get files legitimately and NOT assume a file from an
illegitimate source is OK just because it seems to work.
Once there is no reliable source the integrity of computer security is
compromised. This can become a dangerous pattern to get files from just
anywhere.
These are some of the major reasons not to get files especially anti
virus files from unauthorized sources especially sites with a history
such as this.

Hi

For Norton Antivirus :

After installing XP Service Pack 2, the message "Your computer might
be at risk . . . " appears
