SP2 and August 16th

According to many websites, SP2 will be released on August 16th via
Automatic Updates to computers not running pre-releases versions of Windows
XP Service Pack 2. Does this release on Monday cover the entire United
States, or will it be staggered?

I suspect that there will be a staggering number of computers being
updated when it is released. :)

It covers the entire world if you're needing the English language
version of SP-2. So yes, even if you live in NY, we will let you
download it. But only this once......

I thought SP2 wasn't available thru Windows Update until near the end of
the month? For example, here is the schedule I'm referring to:

8/6 Release to manufacturing
8/9 Release to Microsoft Download Center (network installation package)
8/9 Release to MSDN subscription site (CD ISO image)
***8/10 Release to Automatic Updates (for machines running pre-release
versions of
Windows XP Service Pack 2 only)***
8/16 Release to Automatic Updates (for machines NOT running pre-releases
versions of Windows XP Service Pack 2)
8/16 Release to Software Update Services
Later in August Release to Windows Update for interactive user installations

heh, by the way i plan to wait at least a couple weeks
before getting sp2. i've heard far too many "my computer
won't work anymore" stories.

what i meant is that if it's set to be available through
automatic updates on august 16th, everyone should be able
to go to windowsupdate to get sp2 whether or not their
computer pops up with an update notification.

personally, i'm waiting a week or two to see precisely what
it contains other than the "firewall is turned on by
default" thing, and also because i want to wait and see
what horrific "computer no longer working" issues people
experience after installation.

the month? For example, here is the schedule I'm

Since SP-2 has been available for almost a week many are already
commenting.
If you are visiting these newsgroups, you should be able to see many
comments, both good and bad.

Don't wait till Monday to start reading.

I think you will find it then on MS servers in other places too. And
they will probably stagger under the load if everyone floods to it. You
may do better to wait until free CDs are available

Well it's 3:30 AM, August 16th GMT, and there is no sign of sp2 via automatic
update or manual update for that matter. Actually I am on PST, but figured
the 16th started 3 1/2 hours ago GMT.

No, your real name would not happen to be Richard, son of James Head ?
I guess you have never heard of scheduled jobs, lights out operations etc!

Robert.
Since Microsoft may be limiting the number of computers getting SP-2
each day, you may have to wait a while.
Also for time reference, Pacific time is most relevant since that is
where Microsoft is located.

Yes and don't expect it until late afternoon or early evening.

I agree, but they are an international company with customers on GMT.
Even in my own meger profession I have to interact daily with Europe early
(or is it late) in the AM.

Once it starts, if it has not yet started, it will be 24/7 nearly
forever.
Time zone and actual start time is not really relevant because of
that.

They may be international but they still have to start sometime.
You have not given any reason at all why Microsoft should start at any
particular time or Time Zone reference.
You suggest GMT but others can give just as good a reason for almost
any other Time Zone as the start.
Thus it is reasonable for Microsoft to pick what ever suits them for
what ever reason also suits them.
