I am waiting to buy a new machine until Vista SP1 is released.

Any ideas on when that will be?

Thanks in advance. Bob.

No set release date, but rumored to be in February sometime, possibly the
15th.

The Microsoft web site says it is "currently planned for 1H CY2008.
This date is preliminary."

Note the words "currently planned" and "preliminary." This "first
half" is an estimate, not a promise.

Like most of us here, I expect that Microsoft will meet that estimate,
and it *will* be some time before June 30, probably well before June
30. But don't bet the farm on it. If a significant-enough issue arises
with the current test version, they could decide to delay it, without
going back on anything they have promised.

Regardless of when it comes out, if you want to buy a new computer, I
see no reason to wait. Vista works fine right now.

Considering that the latest SP1 adds no longer a watermark stating
"evaluation copy" on Vista's Desktop, and having in mind that the
buildstring reads now :

Microsoft Windows Vista ( 6001.longhorn_rtm.080118-1840 )

I would say it is only a question of days, maybe weeks but not months from
now on.

Forget About Windows Vista Completely And Buy An Open Source Linux Ubuntu
7.10 Release To Web Computer From Dell's Open Source Computer's Unit, Just
FYI.

P.S. If You Think That Windows Vista Service Pack One Is Going To Fix The
Problems With Windows Vista Release To Manufacturing, You Are Sorely
Mistaken, I Am A MSDN Operating Systems Level Subscriber, As Well As A
Microsoft Tech Net Direct Subscriber, And I Have Already Had The Chance To
Try Out Integrated Installations Of Windows Vista, Service Pack One, Release
Candidate One, And I Can Tell You That The Problems That Occur In Windows
Vista Release To Manufacturing Have Not Gone Away Yet In The Current Beta
Versions Of Windows Vista Service Pack One, Just FYI.

Vista works just fine. I, too, an a MSDN subscriber and SP1 works for me.
Linux is a good alternative, but Vista isn't as bad as you say.

I totally agree ... I had problems with Vista until the 36th patch came out,
then it stabilized. And my problems could have been mostly my particular
hardware config (home built machine.)

I tried Ubuntu ... I tried Red Hat ... I had Macs long ago ... I have always
come back to Windows. Despite the reviews of Info Week and the like, I think
Vista is definitely more secure than XP and I am glad. I was unhappy that
industry voices forced Microsoft to lessen security for Active X permissions
in IE7 but I understand why MS caved. And I hope all the UAC whiners don't
force modifications in the secure layer model.

As far as Linux being more secure, and Ubuntu in particular, that was NOT my
experience at all. The hype did not survive the reality ... maybe in the
future someone will create a better OS than Windows but I have not seen it
yet and I have tried the alternatives. I'll keep Vista With Some Warts,
thank you ... vanilla
