I want to but Windows Vista Ultimate.
Is it worth to wait until SP1 will be released before buying?
 
Only you can answer that question since you are the only one that
knows your needs.
Windows Vista works fine on countless computers including two older
computers of my own.

However some software and hardware has issues and depending on their
manufacturer determines if/when there will be Windows Vista support.

Before purchasing determine if all your essential hardware and
software is compatible.

It is an advisor so treat it as such.
You still need to determine if Windows Vista is suitable,
If your hardware and software is suitable, there will probably be few
if any problems.

Many wait for the first Service Pack.
But their reasons differ depending on their own circumstances.
Generally the Service Pack contains all the previous updates and
little more.
However by the time a Service Pack Comes out, many 3rd party
manufacturers have finally done what is necessary to make their
products compatible with the new operating system.
Many never do leaving some with older hardware and software that is
incompatible with the new operating system.

Much older hardware and software works fine immediately or in
Compatibility Mode.
My 5 year old HP Printer worked well with Windows Vista until it had
an unrelated failure.

If you simply want the latest version of Windows, purchase now.

That's up to you but it seems like a good idea in general if you have no
pressing need to upgrade from XP. If you can't identify a set of features
in Vista that aren't there in XP that you desperately need then it's
probably wise to wait. There are a number of problems with this new OS
highlighted often in this newsgroup but if you machine is brand new and is
truly Vista compatible you might want to dive in now. Also, you'll probably
have fewer problems with the 32-bit version of Vista than the 64-bit version
mainly due to driver issues.

Yes. That is the course recommended by most competent consultants.

You see statements like "wait for SP1" all the time, and with every
new version of Windows that comes out. My view is that it's mostly a
nonsensical point of view.

Hotfixes to Vista (and every other version of Windows) come out all
the time, as needed. At some point Microsoft decides to roll up all
the existing hotfixes into something called a service pack (they may
or may not add other hotfixes at that time). But there's nothing magic
about the day when they decide to do it, and it's entirely at their
discretion as to when to do so. Because it's an arbitrary decision as
to when to release it, it doesn't really represent any significant
milestone in the life of the product.

If you don't want to install a new version of Windows immediately,
that's certainly your prerogative. But it makes just as much sense to
say "wait six months" or "wait 197.8 days" as it does to say "wait for
SP1."

Personally, my experience with Vista is that it's been very stable,
and by and large I like it a lot. I'm not sure that everyone needs to
rush out to upgrade to it, but for anyone buying a new computer and
wondering what operating system to put on it, I certainly recommend
Vista.
