SP#1 update/install problem

I have a two year old system, that came preload with
Windows XP and a bunch of application software ... had
data corruption recently, and since my system was no
longer under the original warrantee, I took it upon
myself to rebuild the system (software wise) ... to make
sure I started clean, I "fdisked" the 60 Gig drive, and
reformated ... installed the OS from the original Windows
CD ... during this process (over the course of a weekend)
I also moved from 56K modem to DSL ... and without
thinking about it, the system was infected by the Blaster
virus (before I could get the OS patches loaded) ...

After removing the Blaster virus, there were other
issues, so I started again with a reformat of the
disk ... I kept the DSL offline until I needed to get
SP#1 and the various other updates ...

Here's my problem ... SP#1 will not load, complaining
about some "catalogs" that can not be installed (sorry,
do not have the exact text here) and 6 of the "security"
patches also will not load (note: I've tried 4-5 times
with each) ... I've also installed Norton virus check and
determined from the most recent updates that there are no
viruses (especially no BLASTER) on the system ...

Anybody have any suggestions ???
(I will be posting a similar query to MS later today)

Rename the folder windows\system32\catroot2 and reboot. That will
generate a new, clean folder, and you can then delete the renamed one.

Make sure that you have the firewall enabled to keep Blast out. before
ever connecting to the net. Network Connections, r-click the
connection; Properties - Advanced, click the Protect my system box.

Then start with SP1 and then the cumulative security patch, Q826939

Then Q817287 which is the cure for the catroot problem:
