Soundcard detected but not available?

Hi

My winxp finds the motherboard via'97 sound card but there is no sound
because windows can't find an audiocard?

I think XP's left brain isn't talking to its right brain.

I tried removing drivers & it gets re-found on re-booting & tried
installing via's drivers - no luck.

What can I do next????

get a status from device manager.
Look in the event log for related messages.
Check control panel sounds and audio for clues.
Look in services. Is the windows audio service started?
