Case speaker used for alerts instead of soundcard

Can anyone tell me how to stop windows using the speaker in the case for
alerts instead the normal sound though the main speakers?

I know windows will resort to the case speaker if it doesnt find a
"real" sound device, but after installing the soundcard drivers windows
will usually revert to using that sound device as it should.

So why on earth has windows decided to carry on using the case speaker
instead?

The soundcard is installed and working perfectly well for everything
else, other windows sound play fine through the main speakers.

Setting the Sound Scheme in CP makes no difference at all.

Anyone any idea how to fix this?

Start > Run: SNDVOL32 > Options > Properties > Playback (tick). Depending
on the sound driver, the option "PC Speaker" might be available. Tick that
option if present in order to show up and mute that device. If not muted,
the default system sounds will be directed to the speaker usually.
