mixer devices not available?

I keep getting this message: There are no active mixer devices available. To
install mixer devices go to control panel.

It started when I reformatted my computer. Reinstalled windows xp. All
drivers installed no problem had sound until I downloaded and reinstalled
service pack 2. Now I have no sound and get the message above. Un-installing
and re-installing sound driver does not help. My motherboard is an Asus
VIAKT400/333 series with soundmax integrated digital audio. I've gone through
the reformat twice so I know the sound works but as soon as SP2 was
installed I get nothing. I've tried several of the soulutions to fix this
supplied by other forums but nothing. Can anyone help? Thanks.

Ialso have the same problem. I have a pentium 4, 3.2 gig processor on an
Asus P4P800 MB and have Soundblaster Audigy sound card installed. It has
worked fine, until recently it stoppped. I reboot and the sound will work
for a few minutes (maybe one song, or use of sound) and then stops working
and I get error "there are no active mixer devices available, ..... I have
read other blogs and no solution. Does anybody know what the problem might
be and how to solve it? My guess is some recent windows update, as I keep my
system current with updates.
