Sound

A friend has no sound on his Compac desktop.. In control panel, systems,
hardware, device manager, when sound and game controllers is expanded the
sound driver is disabled. Right clicking to get the drop down menu has no
'enable' to put
a check on and therefore cannot be enabled. I'm stumped. Anyone any idea?
Bios setting?? Registry bad?
Sound driver is latest version from manufacturer. This occurred when
restoring system to state it was in when bought.
Thanks!

Onboard sound chip, (originally perhaps), then later a PCI sound card added
?
If so, onboard sound chip needs to be switched off in bios.

But how is sound driver enabled???

1. When booting the machine, press whatever key the machine uses to enter
the BIOS set up. The initial boot screen normally tells you what key to
press. If you want to pause the screen so you can read, press the
Pause/Break key; press Escape to continue. Once in BIOS set up, use the
arrow keys to navigate, find the setting for the sound and assure it is
enabled. Follow on screen instructions to exit.

2. Assure that a sound driver is actually installed via its
details/properties in Device Manager.

3. Install a mixer so the sound driver(s) can be utilized.

sound.

This was done. Drivers were updated and reinstalled. However in device
manager, with sound and game controllers expanded, right clicking on
'Realtek' (audio driver) there is no item in the dropdown menu to 'enable'
the driver.

Excuse my stupidity. How do I check? Where can I get one if needed? Does one
come with XP? Can this problem be fixed without buying a sound card? Thanks
for your help.

There is no indication of a mixer there (on my computer) My system uses
SoundMax for the audio driver. My friends
computer uses RealTek for the audio driver. These are listed under 'default
device'.

Push the button under "Sound playback" that says "Volume". What happens?

Also, here is a link to RealTec's pdf instructions on installing their
drivers * AND SOFTWARE*. Driver alone won't do it.

No no no. Basically, user programs use mixer, mixer uses driver.
