Sometimes sound

Newly installed XP w/SP3. All hardware drivers installed. No hardware
problems noted in device manager. The PC has connected to the internet once
for activation, that's it. An MS game, Age of Empires III is the problem
with sound.

During playing of the game, anywhere in the game, anywhere as far as time
into the game, the sound just flat out stops. May last a minute, may last an
hour. The sound may re-occur again anywhere or anytime in the game. This
may occur in cycles during any game play.

There is no AV, trojan sniffer, or software firewall installed. There is
sharing, but none with the onboard sound. Uses Realtek AC97 Audio/status
OK.
Driver c:\windows\system32\drivers\alcxwdm.sys (5.10.5750 built by: WinDDK,
2.19 MB (2,297,664 bytes), 8/17/2008 3:19 PM)

Running 3rd party apps are Incd, HP software for USB printer.

1. Get an antivirus on that computer ASAP. I recommend NOD32 (commercial) or
Avast (free version available).

2. Make sure the Windows Firewall is on.

3. Uninstall InCD. It causes a lot of issues and packet-writing (RW) is
unreliable for backup. You can keep the rest of Nero.

The above items are not related to your issue but are important.

4. Go to the game mftr.'s website and look for patches, known issues, and/or
workarounds. See if there is a users' forum. It is common for sound/video
issues to arise with games and there is usually lots of information about
those issues on the game's website. The first thing my gamer boys here do
after installing a game is go to the game's website and download/install
patches. The last game I saw that didn't immediately have patches was for
Win95!

Besides what Malke said to do, look up the latest available Realtek
AC97 drivers. It has been previously posted, in this newsgroup, that
SP3 may have problems with drivers, especially audio cards. This is
usually solved with an updated driver.

No internet access, nothing external accessed. Just used to play this one
game locally. Therefore, no AV, no firewall, no nothing.

No firewall used, no internet access, not networked.

2 years running of this version of INCD of "unreliable" usage. Some of the
older versions of INCD fall into your umbrella though. Another nuance is if
2 PCs aren't using the same version of INCD, there may be problems reading
the CD written by another PC. This is also true when going to a newer
version of INCD on the same PC trying to use the same burnt CD for its own
data.. Can't read the old written data. This I learned by trial and error.

MICROSOFT has one game patch for the game. I've tried with and without the
patch, no change in sound symptoms.

Gonna look for revised Realtek drivers per Smlunatick.

If that don't work, gonna uninstall game, wipe game remnants visible in the
file system and start all over.
