sound

Hello all
I have a new laptop, HP Compaq, running Vista.
I have the volume set on high on the task bar, and in the sound properties
in the control panel, but it is hardly audible. When I test the sound in
properties it's ok and Windows Media player is just about ok. (or will do)
but unless I'm right at the laptop, i can't hear any other of the sounds,
they are so low. i.e when I'm buzzed on IM, email notification, critical
battery etc.
I know sounds on laptops aren't that good unless you have speakers, but this
is ridiculously low. May as well be on mute!
Any ideas?

What does that mean? My date and time is spot on.

Greenwich Mean Time : Dublin, Edinburgh, Lisbon, London), Just FYI.
If you feel the need to slap someone's wrist, at least give them the
solution
