Speaker sound

Rather than turn my speakers on and off all the time, I prefer to leave
them turned on but I do not like to hear the sounds that Windows Vista makes
when it is turned on and off. Is there a way to mute (or turn off) this
sound? Thanks for your help.

One way is to turn off system sounds in the Control Panel.

Control Panel -> Hardware and Sound -> Change system sounds

and then change to suit.
