Sound wont work

i installed windows xp home sp2 on a computer everything works but the sound.
driver says it works fine but nothing comes out of the speakers so i go get a
sound card and install the driver and test the sound and nothing comes out
but it says it was a successfule test. so i dug further into my sounds and
audio devices in control panel and i hit the sound tab and its windows theme
sounds and go to play a sound in the menu and nothing comes out and the
button never goes back to the triangle (play) it says as the stop (square)
like its not stoping.
i'm confused any thoughts

Open Volume Control (probably next to the clock) and check if any
of the controls are Muted. If they are, uncheck them and try again.
