Sound won't make a sound

I've got a Sony Vaio laptop with XP Home. I just installed SP2. Then my
sound disappeared. Just the system beep -- which I don't want.

I downloaded the original and additional/enhanced sound drivers from Sony.
There was a note that the additional/enhanced sound drivers would fix a
problem "no sound after installing SP2" I installed the original -- got a
message that I had a newer file. Cancelled. I installed the enhanced
drivers -- all installed okay. Rebooted.

Still no sound! Got a message saying "No Sound Device installed." I
checked the sound device via Control Panel. It says it is installed and
working fine. The Sound Device is Yamaha AC-XG.

What should I do:
1. To get my sound back.
2. To turn off the system beep when I'm in class.

Thank you.

Try removing the driver and the sound device in device manager and reboot
then install driver if it is not found.

Two things to check: First, the output is unmuted in Volume
control and that the slider is allowing output. And second,
the speakers are turned on to allow sound output. The system
beep could be emitted from a different source.

And, almost forgot, a third thing: There are no headphones plugged
into the laptop or the headphone jack is clear, i.e., not shorted.
