Sound Volume Indicator Bars

The green sound volume indicator bars that used to graphically indicate my
volume level as I adjusted it have vanished. How to make them return?

Thanks. I discovered, via yr suggestion, that I needed to reload my
laptop's special key assignment/management software...same idea. Works now.
