sound schemes on programs and windows start up has gone

For some reason none of my programs sounds schemes are
working , I'm at a loss now , having checked volume to
make sure not on mute . all music plays ok , all
videos ... windows start up doesnt play , or any of the
other little sounds that you get with assorted
programs .. help !

click on control panel, then click on sounds/audio devices.
you'll see all your devices, i.e., windows, start program minimize,
maximize, etc. etc.
If there isn't a "speaker" icon next to each device, then click on sounds
and then click on browse. You should come up with various sound schemes.
