No web, windows sounds

Although my system plays saved AVIs and MP3s cloud and clear, Internet
Explorer does not play any sounds at all. I've noticed the Windows system
sounds are gone, too (although I do not miss those).

* Hardware and speaker volumes are ok (saved music and video play fine).
* Multimedia options on IE Tools>Internet Options>Advanced are all checked.
* Windows sound scheme set to default on sound control panel
* All volume sliders appear to be on...no "mutes" checked

Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance

Try this:-
Open Control Panel|Open Sounds and Audio Devices|Sounds| Now select
desired sound effect for "Complete Navigation" and "Start Navigation",
then click "apply.
