No web, windows sounds

I've been unable to diagnose this problem for weeks:

Although my system plays saved AVIs and MP3s cloud and clear, Internet
Explorer does not play any sounds at all. I've noticed the Windows system
sounds are gone, too (although I do not miss those).

* Hardware and speaker volumes are ok (saved music and video play fine).
* Multimedia options on IE Tools>Internet Options>Advanced are all checked.
* Windows sound scheme set to default on sound control panel. Resetting the
various sound associations has no effect.
* All volume sliders appear to be on...no "mutes" checked
* I tried the fixes at http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com

Any suggestions?

I would try downloading IE from http://support.microsoft.com/ and reinstall it.

Every time you're asked if you want to keep a newer file say yes.

Or use Firefox from http://www.mozilla, which has the ability to run IE from
withing it by adding an extension.

To download the extension go to http://www.mozilla.org/ and look for IE View
on the Extensions page.

If you find a solution that works, PLEASE let me know! I've been asking the
same question for weeks now.. System sounds gone but other sounds, MP3's,
etc, play fine. Solutions at Kelly's Korner no help but nobody seems to be
able to throw up any other suggestions of use... My prob affects all the
system sounds even those from Yahoo/MSN Messenger although I can chat by
voice fine, and also sounds from IE and OE although all music and games are
OK...
