No windows sounds

In my account, NONE of the windows sounds will play. Music plays, videos
have sound, just no windows sounds. Like Start Windows, Exit Windows,
default beep, exclamation, etc.
In Sound properties all these have assigned sounds and will play just fine
when tested. I've even tried changing sound schemes. Nothing is muted in
the volume control. I have another dummy account (limited user) set up for
testing, and all the sounds work just fine in that account.
What could be causing this?
Everything was working fine a few days ago.

In TweakUI on the General Tab is "Beep on Errors" checked? If not check
it and see if that makes a difference.

It was. I unchecked it, applied, then rechecked it and applied.
No joy.

Hi,

If this was caused by a recent update, do a roll back via the Device
Manager. While there, are any codes listed? Also check your BIOS to make
sure Audio hasn't been disabled. Ipod software has caused this behavior for
many users. Lastly under Volume/Advanced/Other Controls/check Digital
Output only. Good luck!

Tried all those at your suggestion.
Oddly I just noticed that ONE of my sounds is working.
"Select". When I click on something, it makes a tick sound.

The WSS ( Windows Sound System ) is notoriously flawed. That's why ALSA
is gaining so much ground.

It hasn't... all my other sounds are fine.

Don't have any of that.
Lastly under Volume/Advanced/Other > Controls/check Digital Output >
only.

Not an option on mine.
Good luck!

Apparently that'll be the only fix! :)

How is the Windows Sound System notoriously flawed? Explanation
PLEASE!!

The problem with ALSA is, it either works, or it don't, and when it
does not work, no amount of f*cking about with kernels and config files
will ever make it work, unless you pop off down to the computer store
and buy a sound card that is compatible with it.

All sounds cards manufactured will come with windows drivers, and any
sound cards recently manufactured will work with 2000/XP/2003.

I, and no one I know has ever had a problem getting sound cards working
under windows.

Ok, I thought I remembered Alex Nichols mentioning that this needed to
be activated to get windows sounds. I may not have remembered right.
