sound problems

I'm just getting acquainted with my computer. I installed winxp pro and
noticed that there was no sound,even though everything was connected right. I
tried to search for any info on the computer pertaining to any sound card
installed but found none.
-Other than opening the pc is there any other way I can find out whats going
on? I just think It"s odd especially these days not to have sound cards put
in,mine was put together you can say from scratch from a computer shop.

R.click my computer,properties,device mgr,scroll to sound,expand the tree,
R.click on the cards decriptive,properties,see what info it shows.You can
always
uninstall it,restart computer,xp will reinstall on reboot.
