Sound problems in Windows XP with games

I've been having a problem with sound on games ever since
I installed Windows XP. The two games that I have noticed
the problem on are Civilization III and Heroes of Might
and Magic IV (Both games that are compatible with Windows
XP). I have no problem playing the games, but the music
will at points jump back and repeat itself, sometimes
several times. This happens over and over. I don't know
why and I've tried several troubleshooting methods. Any
help would be appreciated.

What version of DirectX do you currently have installed? If you are not
sure, go to Start:Run and type in dxdiag. That should bring up the
information for you.
