sound problem on new XP

Have a very new XP Home PC from Gateway and can not get the sound to turn on. It did work for a while but have checked all connections (OK), tested the hardware which showed the mike working and the sound transmitting but sound did not come out of speakers. All wires are connected correctly and no mute switches that I can see are on. Any suggestions????? I'm at wits end and I'm sure it's an easy fix but I can't figure it out.

Sounds like (Sorry for the pun) you have tried several things, but, how
about this; Control Panel, Sounds Speech and Audio Devices, Sounds and Audio
devices, Audio tab, check Sound playback, and make sure dropdown has correct
item listed; also, in that tab, under Sound playback, click "Advanced", and
make sure your speaker selection is correct for your installed speakers; and
under "Volume" tab, Device Volume, Advanced, make sure "Mute" is not
checked. I am sorry, I know all this is simple stuff, but I just helped
someone the other day with the same symptoms, and this is where I found the
problem. Good Luck.
