Sound not working

I have lost sound on my laptop and can't get it back. I've been trying to
watch video clips of all format types, and I can't get audio on any of them.

Ive gone through "Sounds and Audio Devices" in the control panel. I did the
"test hardware" but I dont have a microphone to use for the test. I plugged
in my roommate's computer speakers, and they didn't work either. I've gone
through everything I can think of. Does anyone have any suggestions on what
the problem might be and how to fix it?

Thanks.

Hi I lost sound also - in my case today, when I just downloaded and
installed Windows Media Player 10 (I had 9 working fine). When 10 installed,
I had no sound. I even had no sound from the headphones socket. My solution
was to go to the System Restore and go back to the way things were just
before the Media Player 10 install.

A solution of sorts, but where did the sound go when Player 10 was
installed, and why?

John.

My sound doesn't work at all either. The speakers are plugged in to the
computer. I turn the volume to the max, and all I hear is this buzzing. I
don't hear system sounds. WMP won't play my CDs and I get this message:

Windows Media Player cannot play the file because there is a problem with
your sound device. There may not be a sound device installed on your
computer, it may be in use by another program, or it may not be functioning
properly.

I also check under Sound Devices in Control Panel, and under the Hardware
tab, where my audio devices are listed, the device properties say that it's
working properly. But if I look back under the Volume tab, there is No Audio
Device.

I recently had to erase my computer because of spyware. Did this affect the
the sound too?
