No Sound

Suddenly, today, I have no sound at all. I'm using an XP system and have
never had this problem before.
I'm getting no system sounds and no sound from CD's, Windows Media, Real
Audio... nothing.
I've gone through all the "help" steps: checked vol. controls, device
manager, etc. I know the speakers are working because I hear the "pop" when
I turn them on or off.

(start/run, type sndrec32
It is a small app set to appear offscreen by default. It will show an icon
on the taskbar, and you can press alt-space for the system menu, and M for
move, to click the mouse to move it onscreen. It will let you play a sound,
ans see a small display of the audio output as a wave image. This will tell
you if you are playing the sound, and let you narrow the problem to some
hardware device, like a cable, or plug.

Check the following forum post.. at least some variation of that information
may help you. Backup the registry key before beginning. Start\Run\type:
"regedit" (no quotes) and Enter\go to
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\MediaPlayer\NodeCLSIDs\{95037DA1-6ED9-
4B27-8CFF-9AD3DFB0B2F2} right click\Export and save as format .reg,... or
..txt, which you can return to .reg format when restoring the backup to the
registry in case of a problem.

The app showed up on screen when I ran sndrec32. I played the sound and
there was no wave movement at all. So, if I read you're post correctly,
it's a cable or plug issue?

Thank you for this, Ronaldo..
I admit much of what you've written here exceeds my limited knowledge of
computers. I'm going to follow through on Marks message, above, and if that
doesn't work, explore these posts more thoroughly..

P.S. The major difference I see is that my system sounds are gone as well
as any other sound source, device or hardware driven. And I've not added any
programs other than a small print screen program from SimCafe as follows:

Check your registry for possible missing values.. many people have restored
their PC sound after following the fix as described in the Weyland forum
(link bellow) The initial post starts with a solution in Macromedia Flash
Player, but it applies to other missing sound problems as you can read in
the forum.

This is essentially what the fix consists of:

1. Go to START > RUN > REGEDIT.EXE >
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows T\CurrentVersion\Drivers32
Create a new String value named "wavemapper". As value give it
"msacm32.drv". (RIGHT CLICK the RIGHT WINDOW / NEW / STRING VALUE -enter
"wavemapper" HIGHLIGHT wavemapper for VALUE AS and enter- msacam32.drv

Also if you still are not getting any sound, go to:
Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Services > Windows Audio and make
sure the Status column has been started. Services are not saving my settings
so I have to do this every time I reboot.

My system had no sound when playing MIDI files. I found a fix to that based
on your solution: At the same place where you add "wavemapper", add a new
string named "midimapper" and gives it a value "midimap.dll".

The following have been my solutions whenever I've had the same problem:

1.. You may have several sound cards installed and the wrong one may be
set as default. To set the correct sound card as default: in the Control
Panel\Sound and Audio Devices\Audio\Sound Reproduction\Default device\
Select from the scroll window, if you only have one sound card, this is
obviously not your problem,.. so try the next.
2.. Uninstall the sound card in the Device Manager and restart the
computer to allow Windows to reinstall the driver. You can do it also from
the Control Panel\Sound and Audio Devices\Hardware\highlight the sound
card\Properties\Driver\Select "Uninstall" and restart the computer.

Don't ask how, because I haven't clue, but I was working with the Dell chat
and they moved my Wave vol. up and that was the problem. I have no idea how
this got moved, but it must have, because now everything is working fine.
But again.. thanks to you and Mark for your help.
