Sound Card

I believe that I may already know the answer to my question, but for a long
time my sound would play fine for a while (during games, music etc.) then
randomly start making unusual noises, which required me to close the game or
media player. Now I cannot get any sound, and my system does not even
recognize that I have a sound card. When I try to play music the system says
that no sound card has been configured. I think that I just need to get a new
sound card, but I am wondering if there is any way to fix this. (current
sound was through the stock 'Conexant Audio' card). Thanks in advance for
those willing to write back.

You can start by removing the sound card drivers,
shut down the PC and remove the sound card.
Next reboot the PC, verify that in device manager no sound card is detected.

Then shut down the PC and reinstall the sound card.
Once again boot the PC and download/install the latest drivers
from your sound card manufacture's web site.

Please not that I have seen several of these Conexant sound cards and
they are not removable. These might be built onto the motherbaord.

It actually appears that my sound card is part of my phone modem, but is
connected to a wire that leads to an 'audio riser card'. So I guess I will
try what smlunatick said with the riser cord, then if that does not work I
will try the phone modem.
