So I just reinstalled XP Pro and now I am having problems. This is a
regular XP CD I am using, not one provided by the manufacturer. My
soundcard is recognized and is showing that it's working properly in the
Device Manager and when I go into the sounds options in the control
panel. However, I am getting no sound! My drivers are up to date. I
even uninstalled, rebooted and Windows recognize it again. Nothing.
I've both enabled and disabled my sound settings in my BIOS as well.
Nothing. I have a HP 503n with Realtek ac97 audio. Everything is
connected as well. So how can XP recognize my sound card, yet I get no
audio? Thanks.

Did you double click the speaker icon down by the clock and check
those settings to see that the sliders are ok and that nothing is
muted. I had that happen one time. The main volume slider was checked
to 'Mute all". I have no idea how or what happened to cause that.

The speaker icon was not available. Under the hardware manager the sound
card showed up and was reported to be functioning properly. Yet, under Sound
and Audio Devices the sound card was not found. I called Toshiba and was
advised to use the recovery CD. After getting a clean install with the
recovery CD all is working now.

Great! Glad you got it working. Aren't computers fun? :)
