Hi, I'm getting an echoing effect in my sound, checked sound, audio for sound
effects being turned on, everything looked o.k. It sounds like the audio is
coming out of a barrel.
Any help would be appreciated..........
Thanks

Check the software that came with your sound card. Even the most basic sound
cards have software that applies effects to the sound.

I think this is a good bet: bring up your control panels, hit "Switch to
Classic View" and open up the Multi-channel Sound Manager. Look on the
Sound Effect tab. If "Environment" doesn't say "<None>", you'll know
what to do from there. If it *does* say "<None>", I won't know what to do.

Hope this helps,
Jim

Hi Jim, thanks for the tid bit, but I have another problem know. I did just
what you said about going to control panel clicking on "switch to classic
view" but could not find "multichannel sound manager" any where, only thing I
found that was close to audio was "sounds & audio device", clicked on that
and then on sound tab but didn't see anything such as multichannel sound
manager.
Any ideas for me know..........?
Thanks again, Tom

Ok, this could get weird. I don't know what sound hardware you have,
and not every control panel on your system is necessarily displayed on
your control panel screen, so now we're not sure what we're looking for
or whether it's even being displayed for you if it's there -- let alone
sure that anything like a tweaked soundcard setting is really what's
causing the problem.

Fun, huh?

On the off chance you've got the same sound card I have and it's just
not displayed, try Start/Run, "control alsndmgr.cpl".

If that didn't do it, let's try the theory that some geeky friend is
having a little fun with you. Try Start/Run, "tweakui". If that pops an
error message, skip to the next paragraph. If it works, select "Control
Panel" from the menu on the left, and scan the *real* control panels
list on the right. The one that makes my sound card sit up and do
tricks is called "alsndmgr.cpl - Realtek AC97 Audio Control Panel" in
tweakui. Look at everything on that list. You have a different sound
card so it'll be called something different. If there's something that
looks sound related there, bring up start/run again and type "control
thatthing.cpl", and poke around.

Still no joy? Try googling something like "realtek ac97 echo effect"
only with your sound card name in there. Or substitute "driver
download" for "echo effect" to go straight for the nuclear option. I
see my card's drivers were just updated last Wednesday... and I also
see from the "echo effect" search that sometime back there a driver
upgrade on my card *provoked* your symptoms.

If you didn't have tweakui, you can get it at
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/powertoys/xppowertoys.mspx
and it's a handy thing to have in its own right. Lots of gratifying
stuff in there.

Win or lose, I'll be curious about how you make out. Post the results,
will you?

Good luck,
Jim

Hi, Jim I guess I'm losing, did everything you mention, down loaded
"tweakui", can't find anything that has anything to do with audio in the
list. Did a google search and found another guy out there that had the same
problem as me way back in 04' I believe it was, told him to go into control
panel audio and turn off effects don't know if it worked for him or not.
My sound card is a "audigy audio df80" can't find web site for that either.
Going to do a search here for my sound card, see what other people are
talking about.
Ain't look'in to good for me is it........?
Thanks, again Tom

Try uninstalling ALL creative sound programs and drivers. Restart the
PC and run the Creative installation disk. Choose the 'Drivers Only'
installation. You won't get any sound effects that way.

Also, make sure you have your speakers plugged in the right sockets.
If it's a 5.1 card, stereo speakers go in the Front Right + Front
Left. Putting the speakers in the Rear sockets will be a completely
different sound quality. Give it a try. Good Luck.

Not too good, no. I googled "audigy df80" for you, here's the third
hit, much more recent than the one you found:
http://forums.creative.com/creativelabs/board/message?board.id=soundblaster&message.id=8989

I'm surprised you didn't find the control panel they mention. Hunting
down a driver update looks like a good thing to try before the solution
they recommend in that discussion.
Thanks, again Tom
de nada.
